welcome to the
1881 artist cooperative
1881’s Mission
The 1881 Artist Cooperative is an artist-led initiative based in Gallup, New Mexico. The cooperative’s aim is to provide opportunity and support to artists of the Southwest, to enrich the communities in our region, and to create greater economic autonomy for artists.
1881’s Vision
The vision for the 1881 artist cooperative is to build a community of local artists and artisans that will collectively own commercial and working spaces.
We aim to open a permanent space that features products and works of members of the co-op, and therefore showcases artists of our region. Our goal is to create a more equitable selling environment where artists themselves own the space and can sell their works with greater autonomy.
Along with a physical commercial space, our vision includes shared work space and equipment. We want to preserve and pass on traditional and modern ways of working in several different disciplines and form a community of regional artists and artisans.
Owned and run by artists and artisans, 1881 co-op will be a collectively and democratically run working and commercial space where artists and artisans can work, pass on traditional techniques and methods, engage with other working artists, welcome innovation, engage with the public, and sell their works.
